2022 CI Christmas Lottery Survey

Island Global Research conducted a survey on behalf of the States of Guernsey and the Government of Jersey to obtain islanders’ views on the 2022 Channel Islands Christmas Lottery, which takes place annually in December. 

The results of this survey, together with feedback from both distributors and the reseller network, have helped inform decisions made towards the format of the 2023 Christmas Draw Game.

Island Global Research designed the survey, which was based on a similar survey that was carried out in April 2020 and sought feedback on participation in the 2019 Christmas Lottery. The latest survey also sought feedback on three possible designs for the next Channel Islands Christmas Lottery.

The latest survey was conducted online, and data was collected between 12 April and 1 May 2023. The survey was also promoted on social media to people aged 18+ living in Jersey and the Bailiwick of Guernsey.

The 2023 survey was completed by a wide range of people. Survey weights were applied to adjust for differences between the age and gender profile of the sample compared to the resident population. This is a standard statistical method that allows IGR to report results for the island as a whole and was also used in the previous survey. The survey results show high participation rates, with 84% of adults reporting they had participated in the 2022 Channel Islands Christmas Lottery. The equivalent statistic for the 2019 Channel Island Christmas Lottery was 87%. 

Key Findings

• 3,076 people participated in the survey, 1,600 in Jersey and 1,476 in Guernsey.
• 85% of participants said the chance of winning was the reason for taking part.
• 50% of those who had taken part previously but didn’t in 2022 indicated it was that the chance of winning was too small.
• Of those that have never taken part 32% indicated the chance of winning was small.
• Of those that don’t take part, 18% believed the first prize was always won in Guernsey.
• 46% of participants were aware of how the Christmas Lottery proceeds are used
• 76% stated that they buy more tickets with what they win in the scratch element of the ticket
• 32% of participants indicated they prefer the game without the instant ticket element in relation to the three choices provided.
• 31% of participants preferred option 3, which was quite a radical change to the existing game with two tickets as part of one draw game.
• 67% of participants like having multiple, smaller prizes (£100 to £500) in the main lottery draw, so the odds of winning are higher.
• 60% of participants believe the first prize is still a life-changing amount of money to win
• 47% said the scratch element is fun and encourages them to buy more tickets
